Islam’s Contributions to Mathematics

Islam’s Contributions to Mathematics

As the Islamic empire flourished, many Muslim intellectuals began to contemplate and eventually advance an indispensable academic field that is now taken for granted: mathematics.
The caliph Harun al-Rashid first sparked an interest in mathematics when his reign began in 786 A.D. by encouraging the knowledgeable mathematicians and scientists of the time to relinquish the then-forgotten works of famous Greek scholars such as Euclid, Archimedes, and Ptolemy and begin studying and translating them. As the Greeks had originally laid down the foundation for modern mathematics with their work in geometry, the advent of newly-translated Greek works undoubtedly encouraged scholars to explore [...]

The roads wound all over the empire. Foreign goods were abundant in markets. The minds of the people were alive, buzzing with innovations and ideas. While the rest of the world was vanquished by intellectual darkness, the Islamic Empire was alive and teeming with knowledge and discovery, creating one of the greatest eras in history.
Mathematicians improved upon works of the early Greeks, scientists experimented with new discoveries, astrologists perfected the science of the lunar calendar, and map-makers made the most accurate maps to be found. Even ordinary merchants and sailors helped give rise to this “Golden Age”: through their travels, [...]

The Abbasid Caliphate (750 C.E. – 1528 C.E.) is not only known as the third of the Caliphates in the Islamic Empire, but as one of the most influential and educative periods in history. It was a golden time marked by incredible advancements in the sciences and arts, advancements that were probably never deemed possible. It was once stated that, “Arab Muslims now studied astronomy, alchemy, medicine and mathematics with such success that, during the ninth and tenth centuries, more scientific discoveries had been achieved in the Abbasid empire than in any previous period of history.”1 In fact, it was [...]

Muawiyah bin Sufyan was seen as the most qualified caliph to take power after Ali, which began the Umayyad Era.
Muawiyah was a great and capable man who governed of Syria and led the strongest military force in the Muslim world. He was admired for his impeccable self-restraint – he had said, “I apply not my sword where my lash suffices, nor my lash where my tongue is enough. And even if there be one hair binding me to my fellowmen, I do not let it break: when they pull I loosen, and if they loosen I pull.” He provided the [...]

Hijab shouldn’t be something that a girl fears or regards as a burden. Wearing the hijab is a part of our religion, something that most Muslim girls wear and wear proudly; but wearing it for the first time can be quite a daunting experience; filled with doubts, insecurities, and indecisions.
For a lot of girls, the image of women swathed in long black robes comes to mind when the word ‘hijab’ is mentioned, perhaps turning them off the idea of wearing hijab because they associate it with a lack or loss of personal style and flair.
For me, the hijab is a [...]

The shadow moves forward in the dim light, accompanied with short bursts of music. A flurry of something not unlike pixie dust tags along behind him, forming words and blowing them apart. In a scene just slightly reminiscent of the “Supplication” music video, he stands, hands at side and head down. The speckles fly about, encircling him.
This is Sami Yusuf’s new music video, “You Came to Me” (a new release from the upcoming new album Without You) just in time for Ramadan. It certainly has a different flavor than the previous five music videos he has recorded. There is only [...]

The Prophet’s death was a significant point in Islamic history which affected the hearts of many both in his time, and our time.
Three months after performing his first and final pilgrimage, the Prophet began to experience a severe headache followed by a high fever. This illness began to take its toll on the Prophet, making him very frail and weak.
As the days passed, his sickness got worse and worse. However, three days before it reached its most severe state, the Prophet asked his wives: “Where shall I stay tomorrow, where shall I stay?” Immediately they understood what [...]
