Guest Post: Beginner Hijab – Being Covered and Confident

Hijab shouldn’t be something that a girl fears or regards as a burden. Wearing the hijab is a part of our religion, something that most Muslim girls wear and wear proudly; but wearing it for the first time can be quite a daunting experience; filled with doubts, insecurities, and indecisions.

For a lot of girls, the image of women swathed in long black robes comes to mind when the word ‘hijab’ is mentioned, perhaps turning them off the idea of wearing hijab because they associate it with a lack or loss of personal style and flair.

For me, the hijab is a myriad of different looks, different styles and unique touches; all with the one thing in common; modesty. In my hijab blogging experience, I have seen girls in so many different looks; from abayas to long skirts, to maxi dresses and loose pants; all dressing within the guidelines of the Islamic requirements of hijab and all with their own individual personalities shining through. Some dress with a punk, gypsy-hippy, classic, preppy-geek, cultural or feminine inspired edge to their clothing choices.

But the thing that shines through most of all is their confidence. How does one show confidence in hijab you might ask? Well for me, I see it in a hijabi who is obviously comfortable in her hijab, a girl who loves it; who wears her loose clothing with style, with an easy elegance and more importantly with a smile that you just know means she is comfortable with her covering.

Wearing hijab doesn’t mean you have to disregard all of the clothing in your closet, immediately replacing it with what someone else has said that you should wear. Go through your clothing, see what you have; try it on in front of a mirror and decide whether it is suitable for a hijabi to wear. If it is modestly loose, opaque and is not figure hugging, then I suggest you keep it and finish it off with a nice scarf.

Do not immediately start with a scarf as the basis for your hijabified outfit. The foundation for all smart hijabies is their clothing. There is no use wearing a scarf on your head while wearing tight, form fitting clothing on your body – tight clothing immediately negates the purpose of hijab. Get the body dressed modestly first and then complete the look with a beautiful scarf.

Invest in a few plain coloured hijabs; ones in neutral shades that you can match with almost anything you put together, but most importantly have fun with it! Scroll through hijab blogs and YouTube videos for different ways to wear hijab – blogs are great places to look for outfit ideas, tips and sharing opinions as well.

Don’t be scared to let your personality shine through. Wear clothes in your way, in your style and showcase what you are all about. Don’t be afraid to mix colours, patterns, and fabrics – and above all have fun with it, because wearing hijab should be an enjoyable experience every day and when you learn to love it, you will be one confident hijabi!

I’m a new hijabi… and although initially I was scared, I’ve found that going in public with my hijab has given me a kind of confidence in my faith and in my self that I couldn’t have foreseen before.

And as an aside, I love your blog. It’s insightful and hilarious! :)

I hate it when people (especially those who don’t wear hijab) think that hijab has to look ugly and fogey. The Prophet told us that we should be moderate and look presentable. That means we should aim to look our best and let our confident shine through.

Then again there are those days when you just don’t feel like putting an effort into dressing nicely lol.

Wonderful article Ange! I’m a regular reader of both of your blogs and this is FAB! You hit the points like DEAD on. It’s really easy to see when a girl isn’t comfortable in her hijab and that translates to others as her not being confident.
